Crete, the most southerly of the Greek islands, has a dramatic beauty rarely found elsewhere. Sandy beaches fringe clear blue seas; snow-capped mountains sweep majestically through vineyards and olivegroves to fertile plains - a treasure-house of gorgeous vegetables and fruit. The next curve in the country road you travel may reveal a field of poppies, a sleepy village or a Minoan palace. There is an abundance of wildlife, plants and flowers that are unique to the island. Breathe in the ever-present scents of wild herbs, taste fresh fruit, the best of the worlds olive oil and healthy, delicious cheeses.

Brochure Errata: 18th October 2017: - VERY IMPORTANT: We have been advised by Living Crete of a NEW Greek Overnight Stay Tax.
Greece Overnight Stay Tax
From 1 January 2018, all passengers will be required to pay an Overnight Stay Tax which has been introduced by the Greek Ministry of Tourism. This will be collected from you when you get to your accommodation. The tax works out between 0.50 - 4 Euros per night. The amount you'll pay will depend on the official rating of your accommodation. 4 Star hotels are expected to collect approximately 3.00 per room per night. You will be asked to pay the tax when you check-in at your accommodation; this can be paid by cash or card
Why do I have to pay?
The tax is something new and specifically aimed at tourists. It's a cost beyond our control and the suppliers of the accommodation. It's a Government imposed tax that has to be paid when you stay in accommodation in Greece. We understand this cost is something you probably weren't expecting to pay and are sorry the Government has decided to bring this in so quickly.
After your direct flight from Cardiff, meet your Tour Manager, and transfer to your hotel in time for your evening meal.
Margarites and Rethymno
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before boarding your coach for today’s half-day included excursion, which brings you within a few minutes into the heart of the Cretan countryside. Stroll through a traditional village, where time seems almost to have stood still. Sip fresh orange-juice or coffee beneath the dappled shade of mulberry trees. Savour the atmosphere of Rethymno’s intriguing Old Town before the short ride back to your hotel.
We head West through luxuriant scenery, visiting Souda Bay, poignantly reminiscent of the Battle of Crete of May 1941, and the city of Chania, famed for its colourful market, golden Venetian harbour and excellent Archaeological and Maritime Museums. Our return journey takes us "off the beaten track" to experience yet more wonderful scenery.
Optional Excursion Knossos and Heraklion.
With your specialist local guide, step back 4000 years into the heart of the Minoan world, whose mysteries will delight your imagination, at the Palace of Knossos. (Why is there an "Evans Street" in Heraklion? - To honour the British archaeologist, Sir Arthur Evans, who dedicated forty years to the excavation of this remarkable palace complex.) Deepen your understanding of this ancient civilisation, the cradle of our own, in Heraklion’s Archaeological Museum, home of the world’s leading collection of Minoan artefacts, from intricate gold jewellery to everyday objects that just happen to be thousands of years old. Stroll seawards to admire the honey-coloured Venetian buildings of the Old Port before returning to Rethymno.
Optional Excursion Around Elounda.
Travelling East through a dramatic mix of landscapes, visit charming Elounda (echoes of "Who Pays the Ferryman?". Take the short boat ride to Spinalonga, immortalised in Victoria Hislop’s award-winning novel "The Island". As you stroll there, your specialist guide will bring the history of the island vividly to life. Especially the story of its 20th-century inhabitants, who carved out a life for themselves against overwhelming odds.
Optional Excursion: The White Mountains.
On this exceptional tour, we first head West, then South through orange-groves, pausing for a relaxing break at Agia Lake, a nature reserve home to an interesting variety of waterbirds. We then continue into the White Mountains, enjoying fabulous views, until we reach the Plateau of Omalos. In this rich agricultural area, the coach brings us to a vantage-point from which we can admire the beginnings of the Samaria Gorge, the longest canyon in Europe, set against a backdrop of stunning natural beauty. We travel back to Rethymno after an included traditional Cretan lunch.
Jewels Of The South Coast
Relax and enjoy some of the loveliest coastal and mountain landscapes of Crete today. The hill-village of Spili, famed for its crystal-clear fountains. Serenely-beautiful Preveli Monastery, which sheltered so many Allied servicemen in the aftermath of the Battle of Crete. A lunchtime break in the fishing-village of Plakias before returning to the hotel in plenty of time to relax before your evening meal.
